With skiing and snowboarding season in full swing, it’s a good idea to prepare your vehicle for the icy and snowy conditions. So here is are step-by-step guide to successfully attach snow chains to your tires!
Step-by-Step Process for Putting on Snow Chains
- Before you leave, ensure you have gloves, chains, a flashlight, and anything else you might need to help you safely put on and remove your snow chains.
- When it is safe, pull off to the shoulder of the road and turn on your hazard lights. Oftentimes, a highway will have designated areas to pull over to set up your snow chains.
- Determine where to place the snow chains based on your vehicle’s drivetrain. For front-wheel-drive vehicles, attach the chains to the front two tires, as these provide the primary traction. If your vehicle is rear-wheel drive, install the chains on the rear tires. For all-wheel-drive vehicles, refer to your owner’s manual for specific guidance, as the recommended placement can vary.
- Pull out chains and instructions. Depending on what brand of snow chains you have, administering them may be different than usual.
- Untangle the chains and make sure everything is straight. Hold it up so the yellow end is on your left hand and the blue end is on your right hand.
- Position the chains on the ground and slide them behind the tire, starting with the yellow cable end. Push the chains from the right side to the left to prepare to secure them to your tire.
- After centering the chains behind the tire, grab both ends and lift them over the top of the wheel. The chains should rest against the axle. Then, connect the yellow and blue cable ends by sliding one into the other and pulling them securely into place.
- Next, locate the red hook directly opposite the cable connection. Attach the red hook on the right to the first available gold link on the left to complete the connection.
- Push the connected chains over the top of the tire and check for the diamond pattern against the tire. The center rail, which runs between each diamond shape, should be positioned along the center of the tire tread.
- Secure the top cable, then attach the red hook on the right to the first gold link on the left. Pull the chains over the tire. At the bottom, pull the red draw chain and chain guide toward you. Run the long red chain through the guide, pulling tightly with both hands. One link will lock into the guide’s notch.
- Using the bungee end of the red chain, pull it through one or both red loops and attach it to a gold-side chain opposite the loops. If you can’t fit it through both loops, pulling it through one and securing it to the side chain left of the loop will work.
- Repeat the process on the second tire.
- Drive forward about 15 feet, or one full car length, to allow the chains to relax and settle onto your tires.
- Stop the car to retighten the chains. To remove slack, unhook the rubber end of the red draw chain and pull it tight. Once tight, guide the red chain through the loops and reattach the bungee end securely to the gold-side chain.
- You are all set to drive!
Tips to Drive Safely in Snowy or Icey Conditions
Driving in snowy or icy conditions requires extra caution to ensure your safety and the safety of others on the road. Here are some tips to follow to make sure you get where you need to go safely:
- Start by reducing your speed and maintaining a greater following distance, as stopping on slick roads takes longer.
- Make smooth, gradual movements when accelerating, braking, and turning to avoid skidding.
- Ensure your tires are properly inflated and have adequate tread for traction.
- Keep your windshield clear of ice and snow, and always use your headlights for better visibility.
- If your vehicle begins to slide, steer gently in the direction you want to go and avoid slamming on the brakes.
- Being prepared with an emergency kit and keeping your gas tank at least half full can also help you navigate winter driving challenges with confidence.
